Heritage Style
Early 19th century architecture in Australia was largely modelled after the Edwardian architecture of Great Britain. By the end of the century, though, Australian architects had added unique elements of design that were more in keeping with the Australian climate and lifestyle. By the time of Australian Federation, a truly unique Australian architectural style had emerged: a style that was finally identified in 1969 as “Federation Style.” As the prestige joinery in Brisbane, ALLKIND Joinery has often been asked to create Federation style solid timber doors, windows and architecture timber products for homes and commercial properties throughout the greater Brisbane area.
Some of the hallmarks of Heritage style include:
- Smaller, more affordable homes than the grand mansions of Edwardian England. Although smaller, these homes retained the same fine craftsmanship and eye for detail of those on large estates.
- Large, covered verandas (especially in Queensland homes) allowed homeowners to take advantage of the balmy Australian weather.
- Decorative motifs included plants and animals of the Australian bush.
The timber of choice for timber entrance doors was the native Australian cedar. So great was the demand for Australian cedar, the species was near extinction on the continent until steps were taken to protect it. More generically called Surian cedar, this beautiful timber is indigenous to all of southern Asia.
